When your moving to Portugal or you want to spend a part of your year there it could be practical to get your own means of transport there. But it's not that simple to make sure you get all the paperwork and registrations in order so you can drive around legally. We would like to give you a few tips to get you started.
Registration of your vehicle
To register your vehicle in Portugal you must be at least 18 years old. But you should also have been in possession of your vehicle for at least 12 months. If you meet both requirements you can apply for tax credit with custom services after six months.
If your planning to stay in Portugal for just parts of the year then you could remit your import tax for 90 days. In some circumstances you can remit it for 183 days but only if:
- Your vehicle is registered in a country that's part of the European union
- De registered owner is not a citizen of Portugal and is not employed there
- The owner imports the vehicle himself
The second solution is perfect if you only want to spend a part of the year in Portugal. You can find more information about the procedure for your drivers-license with the Portugese embassy in Belgium.
